Professional Requirements for Teachers

Unlike general admin roles, teaching positions require specific "License to Practice" documents.

Qualification
Education Degree
A B.Ed or a Bachelor’s degree in your teaching subject + PGCE is mandatory. A 4-year HDE is often not accepted for new visas in 2026.
Registration
SACE Registration
You must be registered with the South African Council for Educators. Most schools require your SACE certificate to be attested.
Specialization
TEFL/CELTA
For ESL/English teachers, a Level 5 TEFL (168+ hours) or CELTA is the standard. A 120-hour certificate may be accepted in lower-tier schools.
Professional History
Experience
Most international schools require a minimum of 2 years post-qualification experience.
Alignment
Subject Matching
For secondary school, your degree must match the subject you are hired to teach (e.g., a B.Sc in Math to teach Mathematics).
Documentation
Attested Certificates
Schools usually expect your degree, teaching license, and supporting documents to be properly attested and ready for visa or onboarding processes.

Document Checklist for Attestation

Academic Qualifications
Original Degree/Diploma: Verified by SAQA
Original Matric Certificate: Verified by Umalusi

Must be original, signed, and issued within 6 months.

The Authentication Steps (Pre-Departure)

Step 1
SAQA / Umalusi Verification

Apply for a verification letter. SAQA verifies degrees; Umalusi verifies Matric certificates.

Step 2
DIRCO (Pretoria)

Submit verified documents to the Department of International Relations and Cooperation for a Certificate of Authentication.

Step 3
Embassy Attestation

Take DIRCO-stamped documents to the relevant Embassy (UAE, Saudi, or Qatar) in Pretoria for the final sticker.

In-Country
MOFA (Local Ministry)

Upon arrival in the Middle East, take documents to the local Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) for the final local stamp.

Important Notes for South Africans

🚫
No Lamination

Never laminate your original certificates. Authentications cannot be placed on laminated paper as the stamps must be applied directly to the original document.

🏛️
Agency vs. DIY

While you can do this yourself, it involves multiple trips to Pretoria (Umalusi, SAQA, DIRCO, and the Embassy). Most people use a courier-based legalization agency to handle the "chain" for them.

✍️
Work Contract

Your employer in the Middle East must provide a signed job offer or contract. This is mandatory to begin the official visa process on their end.
